چکیده
Abstract Mud Crab fattening is a relatively new business idea in Kenya and highly lucrative due to the reasonable prices offered at tourist hotels. This study was aimed developing appropriate culture techniques for Crabs maximize harvestable biomass by local communities avoid recruitment overfishing. Growth survival rates mixed sex investigated period of 230 days Mida Creek, Kenya, using bottom floating cages, two feed types crab experiment. attained weight third month both (466.2 ± 137 g) cages (542.2 109.3 g). There no significant difference mean total mixed-sex crabs systems (t = 1.75, p>0.05), however males showed significantly higher gain compared females. A overall rate found cultured (63.8%), (44.9%). growth performance between fed gastropod tissues those fish offal. The long-term specific (0.69 g d-1) not different from that (0.92 d-1). An analysis potential return on investment be more profitable per production cycle ones. cage system mono-sex male are recommended farmers within mangrove tidal flats Kenya.

Preliminary Study on the Feeding Regime of Laboratory Reared Mud Crab Larva, Scylla serrata (Forsskal, 1775)
Survival of larvae of mud crab, Scylla serrata (Forsskal, 1775) is a persistent issue in the field of induced breeding of the species. A preliminary study was conducted on feeding regimes of laboratory reared larvae and juveniles of S. serrata. The results showed that the survival of the larvae fed with green water alone or green water with plankton and feed was not significantly different from...
متن کاملThe Population dynamics of mud crab (Scylla serrata) in coast of Bandar Khamir (Hormozgan Province)
The Sampling one-year period from October 92 to October 93 on a monthly basis was conducted using gillnets and baited traps. 70% of gillnet catches during flood tide consisted of adults. Sub-adults and juveniles were 28 % and 4.5%, respectively. Similarly, during ebb tide consisted of 51.7%, 24.2%, and 24.1%, respectively. It suggests that gillnets are not sized selective gear. In contrast, bai...
متن کاملEffect of salinity on the survival and growth of mud crabling, Scylla serrata
An experiment was conducted for a period of eight weeks under laboratory conditions to determine the effect of different salinity levels on the survival and growth of crablings of mud crab, Scylla serrata. The different salinity levels tested were: 5 ppt, 10 ppt, 15 ppt, 20 ppt and 25 ppt. The differences in growth increment in terms of body weight (BW) were significant (p<0.05) among different...
متن کاملPhysico-chemical characterization of bacterial and hemagglutinins from the serum of the mud crab Scylla serrata
A naturally occurring hemagglutinin (HA), with activity against bacteria and yeast cells were detected in the serum of Scylla serrata using mammalian erythrocytes (RBC), various bacteria and yeast as indicator cells. The serum gave highest HA titer with rabbit RBC, tripsinized yeast and Vibrio fluvialis. An analysis of the physico-chemical properties of the HA showed it to be specifically depen...
متن کاملPurification and characterization of antibacterial proteins from granular hemocytes of Indian mud crab, Scylla serrata.
Marine invertebrates depend upon antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) as a major component of innate immunity, as they are rapidly synthesized and diffuse upon pathogen invasion. In this study, we report the identification and characterization of a 11 kDa antimicrobial protein, which we name SSAP (for Scylla serrata antimicrobial protein), from granular hemocytes of the mangrove crab S. serrata. The p...
